How is the Gründungszuschuss calculated?

The Gründungszuschuss (start-up grant) from the Agentur für Arbeit comes in two phases. In phase 1 you receive your previous monthly ALG 1 amount plus a flat rate of 300€ for social security, for 6 months. In phase 2 the Agentur can pay a further 300€ per month for 9 months, as long as your business is your main occupation.

Example: with an ALG 1 of 1,400€ you receive 1,700€ per month in phase 1, which adds up to 10,200€. Phase 2 adds up to 2,700€, so the total is up to 12,900€ over 15 months.

Who is eligible for the Gründungszuschuss?

  • You receive ALG 1 and have at least 150 days of entitlement left when you start your business.
  • Your self-employment is your main occupation, with at least 15 hours a week.
  • You have a viability certificate (Tragfähigkeitsbescheinigung) from an expert body, based on your business plan.
  • You can show that you have the skills to run your business.

The Gründungszuschuss is a discretionary benefit (Ermessensleistung). Even if you meet all conditions, the Agentur für Arbeit decides whether you receive it.

Do I have to pay it back, and is it taxed?

No. The grant is tax-free and you never have to pay it back, even if your business does not work out. You can also earn as much as you like on top of it. Only your business income is taxed.

What about health insurance?

The 300€ flat rate is meant to cover your social security, but it has not been raised in years. In 2026, statutory health and care insurance for the self-employed costs at least around 270 to 280€ per month, so most of the 300€ is used up. That is why our calculator shows what you actually keep.

How do I apply?

You apply at your Agentur für Arbeit before you start your business. The key document is the viability certificate, which requires a solid business plan with a financial forecast. In our founder coaching we build both with you, and with an AVGS voucher the coaching is 100% funded.
